Via other European languages, ultimately a borrowing from Medieval Latin manuscriptum ‎(“writing by hand”), from Latin manu ‎(“hand[ablative]”) and scriptus, the past participle of scribō ‎(“I write”), apparently a calque of Germanic origin (cf. earlier Middle High German hantschrift, hantgeschrift, Old English handġewrit ‎(“what is written by hand, deed, contract, manuscript”), Old Norse handrit ‎(“manuscript”)).
