Etymology

From Proto-Germanic *luþô ‎(“coarse woolen cloth”), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)lūt-, *lūd- ‎(“weak, languid”). Cognate with Old Frisian lotha ‎(“thick robe”), Old Saxon lotho ‎(“thick wool robe”), Old High German lodo, ludo ‎(“thick woolen cloth”).
