Late Latin hypothesis, from Ancient Greek ὑπόθεσις ‎(hupóthesis, “base, basis of an argument, supposition”), literally “a placing under”, itself from ὑποτίθημι ‎(hupotíthēmi, “I set before, suggest”), from ὑπό ‎(hupó, “below”) + τίθημι ‎(títhēmi, “I put, place”).
