feri
Romanian
Etymology
Probably from Latin ferīre, present active infinitive of feriō (“strike”). Other less likely explanations include a Vulgar Latin *auferīre, from an alteration of auferre (as with suferi < suffere). Compare Aromanian afirescu, afiriri. Some have tried to connect it, at least in the archaic or regional sense of "to celebrate a holiday", with a Vulgar Latin *fērīre, from fēriae.[1]
Verb
a feri (third-person singular present ferește, past participle ferit) 4th conj.
- to guard from, fend
- to duck, dodge, avoid
- to recoil, shirk
- to be on one's guard, be wary
- (archaic, regional) to respect or keep (a holiday), celebrate
