From the older form *ܚܐܢܐ ‎(ḥaʾnāʾ), dissimilated from *ܚܥܢܐ ‎(ḥaʿnāʾ), from Proto-Semitic *ḥḍn; related to ܚܢܘܬܐ ‎(ḥannūṯāʾ, “uterus”). Compare Arabic حِضْن ‎(ḥiḍn) and Hebrew חֹצֶן ‎(ḥṓṣen).
