Usage notes

This originates as a case form of a defective noun تَحْت ‎(taḥt, “location that is below”). It is declined normally when definite, e.g. التَّحْتُ ‎(at-taḥtu, “the location that is below”). Other forms are the adverbial accusative in the preposition تَحْتَ ‎(taḥta, “below”), the genitive in the expression مِنْ تَحْتِ ‎(min taḥti, “from below, below”) (also with an attached pronoun, as in مِنْ تَحْتِهَا ‎(min taḥtihā, “(from) below it”)), and the irregular expression مِنْ تَحْتُ ‎(min taḥtu, “(from) below”).
