From Middle Persian bwl (bōr, “reddish-brown, bay [horse]”). Cognate with Ossetian бур (bur, “yellow”), Sanskrit बभ्रु (babhru, “deep-brown, reddish-brown, tawny”) and the Old Armenian loanword բորենի (boreni, “hyenea”). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰebʰru-, reduplicated from *bʰer- (“brown”); cognate with Proto-Germanic *bebruz.
