Etymology
From Middle Persian ʾcydhʾk' (az(i)dahāg) / ʾzdhʾg (Manichaean), from Avestan 𐬀𐬲𐬌⸱𐬛𐬀𐬵𐬁𐬐𐬀 (Aži Dahāka), name of a mythical serpent in Zoroastrianism, from 𐬀𐬲𐬌 (aži, “snake; dragon”), from Proto-Iranian (compare Middle Persian ʾc' (az, “dragon”)), from Proto-Indo-Iranian (compare Sanskrit अहि (áhi)), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ógʷʰis, *h₃égʷʰis (“snake”) (compare Ancient Greek ὄφις (óphis) and Old Armenian իժ (iž)) + ⸱𐬛𐬀𐬵𐬁𐬐𐬀 (dahāka), of unknown origin, perhaps cognate to Pashto لوی. Compare Manichaean Parthian ʾjdhʾg (aždahāg) and Old Armenian Աժդահակ (Aždahak).
