Etymology

Supposedly a Mishnaic borrowing from Ancient Greek ζεῦγος ‎(zeûgos, “pair”), in turn derived from Proto-Indo-European *yewg- ‎(“to join”), but compare Arabic زَوْج ‎(zawj, “spouse”), زَوَّجَ ‎(zawwaja, “to join”) and Aramaic זוֹגָא ‎(zōḡā, “pair, spouse”), זַוֵּג ‎(zawwēḡ, “to join”).
