Etymology

The original spelling is աւձիք (awjikʿ), of uncertain origin, + (-kʿ).

Usually connected with Ancient Greek αὐχήν (aukhḗn, neck, throat; isthmus) and ἄμφην (ámphēn, neck). The three words may go back to Proto-Indo-European *anǵʰw- or *angʷʰ-. Alternatively, per Martirosyan's tentative suggestion, they may be borrowed from a substrate language.
