Etymology

Usually considered an inner-Armenian formation as վէպ (vēp) + ասեմ (asem) + -ան (-an), but Asatryan argues for a possibility of borrowing from Middle Iranian *vēp(a)sān, from Old Iranian *waipa-sāhana-; for the first part see վէպ (vēp), for the second գովասան (govasan) and gwsʾn.
