Old Armenian

Etymology

Perhaps a Classical Syriac borrowing. Compare Syriac ܩܠܦܐ ‎(qəlāfāʼ, “sheet of a book”), ܩܠܦ ‎(qəlaf, “to remove the skin, bark”), ܩܠܦܬܐ ‎(qəlāftāʼ, “husk, scale, shell”). Another rendering of the word has survived in dialects as կլեպ ‎(klep).

On the other hand, J̌ahukyan argues for a native Proto-Indo-European origin.

According to Ačaṙean, Georgian ყვლეფა ‎(q̇vlepa) and Laz ღლეპა ‎(ɣleṗa) are borrowed from Armenian.
