According to Ačaṙyan, from Old Persian *Tigrāna, derived through haplology from *tigrarāna (fighting with arrows), composed of 𐎫𐎡𐎥𐎼 (tigra, arrow) (compare Persian تیر (tir)) and *rāna- (fighting) (compare Avestan 𐬭𐬁𐬥𐬀 (rāna, fighter)). Transliterated into Ancient Greek as Τιγράνης (Tigránēs).
