Etymology

From Proto-Slavic, cognate with Slovene smetana, Slovak smotana, Bulgarian сметана (smetana). According to Vasmer, the Slavic words are unrelated to German Schmand, Schmant (sour milk). However, other scholars (Jacob Grimm, Václav Machek) consider Schmand, Schmant to be a loanword from Slavic.[1] See Schmand for more.
