From Middle Dutch vort, voort, from Old Dutch *furt, from Proto-Germanic *furduz (“ford”). Derived, along with Proto-Germanic *ferþuz (“inlet, fjord”), from Proto-Indo-European *pértus (oblique stem *pr̥téw-). Doublette with Dutch fjord (“fjord”).
