Etymology 1

Regionally attested in the sense “to knock or beat rapidly”, which is probably onomatopoeic. The vulgar sense spread in the 20th century from dialects including Central Franconian. In the latter, the word is associated with the noun at hand in standard German Puppe (doll), which association may be secondary, however. Compare etymology 2.
