Etymology

From Old French parchemin, via Latin pergamīna, from Ancient Greek Περγαμηνός ‎(Pergamēnós, “of Pergamun”), which is named for the Ancient city of Pergamon (modern Bergama) in Asia Minor, where it was invented as an expensive alternative for papyrus.
