From Ancient Greek ὀξῠ́ρρῠγχος (oxúrrhunkhos, “the name of an Egyptian fish”) (whence also the place name Ὀξῠ́ρρῠγχος (Oxúrrhunkhos)), from ὀξῠ́ς (oxús, “sharp”) + ῥῠ́γχος (rhúnkhos, “snout”).
