Etymology

From Old Norse napr ‎(“cold, chilly; of a piercing cold wind”) whence the Old Norse nepja ‎(“chilliness, bitter cold”) and Icelandic nepja ‎(“bitter cold, chill”). Confer the Old Norse apr ‎(“cold, sharp”) and nöp ‎(“chilliness”).
