From Andalusian Arabic ǧabalí, from Arabic خِنْزِير (ḵinzīr, “pig”) جَبَلِيّ (jabaliyy, “of the mountains”), from جَبَل (jabal, “mountain”).
Cognate with Galician xabaril, xabarín, Asturian xabalín, Spanish jabalí (whence English javelina) and Aragonese chabalin.
