Ultimately from Latin vappa (“flat wine; figuratively, worthless person”), probably not directly but through the intermediate of dialectal Old French wape, gape, gouape, which has also received Germanic influence from a *hwapjan (“to let to waste, become sour”). At one point meant "rascal" or "ruffian" and evolved in meaning over time.[1]
