From Proto-Germanic *jehwlą, *jeulō (“Yule, Yule month”), from Proto-Indo-European *yekə- (“joke, play”). Cognate with Old Norse jól (“a midwinter festival”), Gothic 𐌾𐌹𐌿𐌻𐌴𐌹𐍃 (jiuleis) in 𐍆𐍂𐌿𐌼𐌰𐌾𐌹𐌿𐌻𐌴𐌹𐍃 (frumajiuleis, “November”).
