gär
Luxembourgish
Etymology
From Old High German gerno, from Proto-Germanic *gernô. Cognate with German gern, Dutch gaarne, Icelandic gjarna, Swedish gärna.
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /ɡɛːə/
- Rhymes: -ɛːə
Adverb
gär
Usage notes
- Since the Luxembourgish language has no verb "to love" or "to like", the construction of gär with the present tense of the verb hunn is used. For example Ech hunn dech gär = I love you, Hien huet de Kuch gär = He likes cake.
- The adverb gär with the subjunctive tense of the verb hunn can also be used for a phrase equivalent to "I would like". For example, Ech hätt gär eng Taass Téi = I would like a cup of tea.
