From Proto-Germanic *frijōndz, originally a present participle of the weak verb *frijōną ‎(“to love, to free”) (Old English frēoġan), from Indo-European *prāy-, *prēy- ‘like, love’. Germanic cognates include Old Frisian friōnd, friūnd (West Frisian freon), Old Saxon friund (Low Saxon Fründ), Dutch vriend, Old High German friunt (German Freund), Old Norse frǫndi, frjándi, frændi (Swedish frände, Danish frænde), Gothic 𐍆𐍂𐌹𐌾𐍉𐌽𐌳𐍃 ‎(frijonds).
