Etymology

From Proto-Germanic *furhiją ‎(“forest of firs”), from Proto-Indo-European *perkʷ- ‎(“tree, oak, fir”). Cognate with Old High German forst ‎(“pine wood, pine forest”), Old English fyrhþ ‎(“wooded country”). More at forest.
