     « Je savais déjà bien, s’écria-t-il, que dans cette maudite maison tout est enchantement ; l’autre fois, au même endroit où je me trouve à présent, on m’a roué de coups de poing et de coups de pied, sans que j’aie su qui me les donnait, et sans que j’aie pu voir personne ; et voilà que maintenant cette tête ne paraît pas, moi qui l’ai vu couper de mes propres yeux, si bien que le sang coulait du corps comme d’une fontaine. »

     "I already knew well," cried he, "that in this cursed house all is enchantment; the other time, in the same spot where I am at present, someone beat me with blows from fists and feet, without my knowing who gave them to me, and without my being able to see anyone; and here now this head is not appearing, I having seen in cut off with my own eyes so well that the blood flowed from the body like from a fountain."
