Etymology

From Old French debatre ‎(“to fight, contend, debate, also literarlly to beat down”) (compare French débattre, débat), from Latin dis- ‎(“apart, in different directions”) + battuō, battuere ‎(“beat, hit, pound, beat up, fight”).
