Cognate with Old Frisian kiāsa (West Frisian kieze), Old Saxon kiosan (Low German kesen), Dutch kiezen, Old High German kiosan, chiosan (German kiesen), Old Norse kjósa (Danish kyse, Icelandic kjósa), Gothic 𐌺𐌹𐌿𐍃𐌰𐌽 ‎(kiusan). The Indo-European root was also the source of Latin gustus ‎(“taste”), Albanian desha ‎(“chosen”).
