From Proto-Germanic *budagą ‎(“body, trunk”). Cognate with Old High German botah ‎(“body, trunk, corpse”).

Perhaps related to Old English bodan ‎(“ground, foundation, bottom, abyss”), from Proto-Germanic *budnaz, *budną ‎(“ground”), from Proto-Indo-European *bhudhn-, *bhudhm- ‎(“earth, bottom”), in the sense that the body returns to the ground, or perhaps in analogy to the body's limbs, when viewed from a reclining position, extend from the body as trees from the ground.
