Etymology

From Old Georgian წუერი ‎(c̣ueri), from Proto-Georgian-Zan *c̣wer-. Further origin is uncertain, but see Old Georgian for more.

Cognate with Mingrelian წვანჯი ‎(c̣vanǯi), წვანდი ‎(c̣vandi). Compare also Svan უ̂ა̈რე, უ̂ერე ‎(ûäre, ûere, “beard”) which may be from the same source (in which case the term can be reconstructed for Proto-Kartvelian).
