Etymology

From Proto-Georgian-Zan *ṗilenʒ₁- ‎(“copper”)[1][2]. Further origin is uncertain. Klimov derives from Proto-Indo-European *(s)plēnd- ‎(“to shine”) and lists Mingrelian ლინჯი ‎(linǯi), Old Armenian պղինձ ‎(płinj) and Arabic *piliz ‎(“metal”) as cognates[1], but this is rejected by Starostin, who derives the lexeme from a Semitic source[2].

According to Ačaṙean from Old Armenian պղինձ ‎(płinj, “copper”)[3], but this is denied by Klimov, stressing phonetic agreement between the cognates[1].

According to Nicholas Marr and Ivane Javakhishvili from earlier *სპირენძ ‎(*sṗirenʒ), meaning “an ore of სპერი ‎(sṗeri)” (modern İspir)[4].

Svan სპილენძ ‎(sṗilenʒ) (and its forms) is a later Georgian-Zan acquisition[1].
