From Old Khmer calācala (“social unrest; social instability”), ultimately from Sanskrit चलाचल (calācala, “changeable; tremulous; unsteady; etc.”, literally “chaotic and unchaotic; moving and not moving; stable and unstable”) or Pali calācala, having the same meaning as Sanskrit. Compare Modern Khmer ចលាចល (châléachlô).
