From مد(mad) +هوش(huš). The first part is cognate to Avestan𐬨𐬀𐬜𐬀(maδa-, “intoxication”), Sanskritमद(mada, “hilarity, rapture, excitement, inspiration, intoxication”). The sense 'astonished, amazed', however, is from an Arabic homonym, مدهوش mad’hūsh, from Arabic دَهِشَ dahisha 'to be astonished, amazed, surprised'.
