Etymology

Ultimately from Apollonius Pergaeus's Ancient Greek term ἀσύμπτωτος ‎(asúmptōtos, “not falling together”), from ἀ ‎(a, “not”) +‎ σύν ‎(sún, “together”) +‎ πτωτός ‎(ptōtós, “fallen”).
