From Turkishiçli köfte, from içli(“stuffed, with filling”), from iç(“the inside”) + -li, and köfte(“kofta”). Literally, "stuffed kofta", called so because usually this dish is made in a form of torpedo-shaped fried croquette stuffed with minced beef or lamb.
Turkish köfte together with Armenian քյուֆթա(kʿyuftʿa) are borrowed from Persian. See քյուֆթա(kʿyuftʿa).
