Etymology

Ačaṙyan rejects all proposals and leaves the origin open.

Ałayan derives աւետ ‎(awet), from Proto-Indo-European *awēd- and the spelling աւէտ ‎(awēt) from *aweid-, both from the root *awed- ‎(“to speak”); compare Ancient Greek ὕδω ‎(húdō, “to tell of, to celebrate”), ἀείδω ‎(aeídō, “to sing, to praise”), Sanskrit वदति ‎(vadati, “to speak, say”), वन्दते ‎(vandate, “to praise, celebrate”), Tocharian B wätk- ‎(“to command, to order”).
