From Ottoman Turkish شاگرد ‎(şâgird), from Persian شاگرد ‎(šâgerd, “pupil”), from older Middle Persian *ašākert, the later attested form of which is 𐭠𐭱𐭠𐭢𐭥𐭲 ‎(ašāgart).
