From Proto-Slavic*stanъ, from Proto-Indo-European*steh₂-(“to stand, stay”), whence also стати(stati, “to stand”), ставити(staviti, “to set, place”), стояти(stojati, “to stand”), стадо(stado, “herd”) and столъ(stolŭ, “seat, throne”). Cognate with Persian ستان(stân, “-stan”) and Sanskrit स्थान(sthā́na, “abode, dwelling”).
