1. (chiefly Eastern Orthodoxy) A vigil lamp; a cresset, usually hanging and richly decorated, containing a floating wick fed by oil, which is placed before icons and altars.
   • 1844, Ljudevit Gaj, Danica horvatska, slavonska i dalmatinska, Vol. 10, No. 42:

     U jednom kutu visila je jednostavna bezuresna ikona, pred kojom je gorelo malo kandilo.

     In one corner hung a plain undecorated icon, before which burned a small vigil lamp.

   • 1898 and 1899, Laza K. Lazarević, Pripovetke, I-II:

     Собу је освјетљавало кандило, које је горјело пред иконом.
