Old French escarlate ‎(“scarlet cloth”), from Medieval Latin scarlatum ‎(“scarlet cloth”), via Persian سقرلاط ‎(saqirlāt, “a warm woollen cloth”), a variant of سقلاط ‎(siqillāt, “scarlet cloth”) from Byzantine Greek σιγιλλᾶτος ‎(sigillâtos), ultimately from Latin (textum) sigillātum.
